Power and Powercut

Its not raining cats and dogs here. But its raining !

Today in the forenoon (6 am to 1 pm), there were showers. Four times, for about two minutes each.  That's raining but not 'good rains'.

Our 'ElectricityManthriji'  yesterday announced that, even if it rains all day long all months long, powercut is here to stay.  Power gives powercut. May God help us.

Leaving it to the Gods is not the solution. Gods will certainly be with us. if :

We use less of power, at home, office, and everywhere.

We make our own power.

We use alternate technologies for saving power.

Bomb scare and after

Last two days, "bomb scare"  was the main topic of discussion among all here.

My neighbor lady was calling my wife and asked (very loud ); "Bombundo ?" . She's asking whether there's any bomb. It was a joke for her. That was the case with many here. Most of the persons , sitting at home, took it as a joke. As if nothing would happen to them !

But a few were really worried. People who travel for their work. Travel by trains and buses were scary to all. And a few of the Government employees didn't go for work atall. They can afford not to go (without loss of attendance or salary !).

TVs were repeatedly showing the scenes of Bomb explosions and its after effects. Thank God, nothing happened in our City (there were alerts). But I am not sure whether the people here did take things in the right perspective.

"Bomb" is different to different people.

Let not any BOMB ever be made or used anywhere anytime for ever !

Coconut trees ... continued

Here I have a few more snaps.

The first one shows my coconut tree, infected by "Mandari" (the well known desease).

Here, you may see another tree infected by some other decease.

Here is a bird's view on to the top of my neighbor's coconut tree. Looks very healthy and beautiful.

The dying tree, a few days ago.

Coconut trees : Terrorist attack

Yeah, today, I am again on Coconut trees.

I am sad ;   One of my three coconut trees is sinking. It's about to die. And its the youngest among the three !

I don't wish to write an essay on this. But I wish to show you a few snaps on the dying tree.

The following are pictures of the decaying head of the tree.

You can see big holes drilled by the terrorists. I shall show them tomorrow. The terrorists are eating away the head of the tree.

New Alternate Energy sources

There’s a news .. “Now, Diesel from Insect Poop”.

Please see the snap (of the news item appeared in ‘Business Today’, July27 ).
The article “Top of Mind” says…. “the shit we talk about is worth its weight in black gold”.

But, … I am sure we already use shit (dung) as our black gold, in the villages and cities as well.
Cow dung cakes (dried in the sun, and stored) are the main fuel used in many villages. For cooking their food, and not for running cars or trucks ! "Gober gas plants" are another intelligent method of converting the bullshit/cow dung into energy; again for use in the kitchens (of villages and cities alike).

* We call “bull shit’ and “cow dung” . But why do we discriminate females ? Dung and not Shit ? May be the cows will complain ! or the bulls ?

** Why are we not attempting any technology to use human dung as a fuel ? Hey.. its not a laughing matter.. I am serious about it ! It’s a source of energy, and it will solve many a problems of disposal (atleast in the cities).

Please read the interesting article in the above picture.

Eka, the supercomputer

“Eka’, the Supercomputer from CRL (Computational Research Laboratories, from Tata) is the latest Indian initiative in Supercomputers.
When I hear that we, in India, have made something new in Computers, I feel very happy. I am very emotional about that ; may be that I love Computers.

Eka is now 132.8 tflops. This upgradation from 117.9 tflops is now achieved through software enhancements.
Eka has 14,400 processors (from HP) in it. CRL says it takes a 45 km cables to connect all the processors !
The development cost of Eka is about $ 30 million.
The application areas include :  Weather modeling,  Aero-space , Automobile engineering
Drug design,  Nanotechnology,  Seismic signal processing,  Animation and rendering
 Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)

Eka, you are great !

Pen friends, e-friends, key bored

A friend of mine, last day, asked me whether I have any pen-friends now .

Pen friends ?  That too when most of us don't use a pen.. and uses only a keyboard to write !

I have e-friends. Can I not call them my pen-friends ? Yes , I think.

Whether I use a pen or a keyboard, both are writing. So, e-friends are certainly pen-friends.

To an e-friend I send e-mails. My chat friends, with whom I chat (using keyboard, mouse, mike and cam) too are my e-friends. Because, when I say "e", it means all forms of communication using computers. Being an e-friend, I am key-bored with my keyboard. Bored of typing !

The economic shift !

When I got my first job in 1972, my salary was just about Rs. 550/- pm.  Over six months'  full salary (and a waiting of over FIVE years !) was necessary to buy a two-wheeler.

Now, the first salary of any youngster (in Engineering profession) is over Rs. 20000/-. He can buy a two wheeler with just one month's full salary, and without any waiting atall !

What do you call this ? The economic shift or the time shift ??  I don't know !

Bombs and Rains

Its raining these days. The rain gods, it seems, have blessed us - though a bit late.

Now atleast, we won't say : Rain rain go away !

We are given half an hour's darkness everyday (by KSEB) to pray :

Rain rain come again

Go away another day

KSEB wants to cut !

And yesterday ... Oh ....  we were told by TV channels that its going to rain bombs in Kerala. But thank God, nothing happened. We are happy; though scared even now.

Kerala : an educated society ?

Dear Mr. Mohandas Pai,
This has reference to your interview by Sri.G.Mahadevan of Hindu on 26 July, and of which the excerpts have been published in ‘The Hindu’ dated 28 July, 2008.

While thanking you for stressing and elaborating on the need for Kerala to educate its youth for making use of its human capital in a better and different way, let me humbly put a few thoughts in the following lines.

The rulers of Kerala believe that ‘being a literate state’ (as they claim it) is something great. I am sorry to say that they are really illiterate, and are unable to understand the meaning of literacy. You made it very clear that literacy in the modern world is not the ability to read or write alphabets, but literacy should strictly mean “educated with ability to do intellectual jobs”.
The rulers and leaders of Kerala society believe that “Kerala is an educated society”. This, as you hinted in your views, is absolutely false. Kerala is not an educated society. (Please don’t make any comparisons !). Education refers to higher level intellectual activities, and ‘educated’ means having a higher intellectual ability with refined behaviour and ability to do such jobs. Having a large population holding ‘degrees’ (of the useless levels) is not necessarily an educated society.

Firstly, the rulers themselves should be educated and possess a high degree of behavioural and intellectual qualities, with high level of thinking and vision. We, in Kerala, lacks this. Then, how do someone say that ‘Kerala is great’.
Many of us think that “Kerala is God’s own country, and is great”. But its not so. And sadly, no one tries to change that state.

About the “English” skills, you made it very clear. The level of English, even for the Engineering students, is really pathetic. Let all these students go back to school and learn English.

Another important thing to say here is that 'there are no good teachers to teach English in schools and colleges' ( as a matter of fact, for any subject ). Because, teachers are the least paid. They how'll someone like to be a teacher. So, the scraps get into teaching profession (Except a few, who like and chose the profession) .

In Kerala, Teachers (Guru) are not respected.  Leave alone respect; did you not hear that a set of students killed their teacher ? TVs showed us how they handle the teachers !

Teachers in Kerala are the lowest paid. A teacher in the 12th standard is paid a couple of thousand Rupees only. A casual worker (manual work, like a painter) gets not less than Rs. 400 per day ! That's over 10,000/- per month. A teacher gets not even half of this !!  In this wonderland of Kerala !!!

Dear Pai, please keep telling these people – our leaders, policy makers, and experts. Let them be aware of what’s needed to change.

Wishing you and INFOSYS all the best.

Auto Drivers

I am fed up of these people.. the auto drivers, the most evil elements in our City.  But Autos are said to be the "poor man's taxi".

Autos, short for the peculiar funny vehicles ' Autorickshaw', are the worst vehicles. I think these autos are an insult to the whole of automobiles. The most ill-designed automobile;  the most trouble maker in the traffic;  with the worst-behaved drivers; all these make the Auto the "demon of the City".  The main problem, more than the vehicle itself, are the drivers of this stupid vehicle.

In our city, auto drivers are notorious for their uncivilised behaviour. They are the focal points of most of the crimes in the city. The major reason is, I am sure, that these drivers are not educated and trained. They are not given any training in 'how to behave'. A driving license is not the proof of a person's ability to drive a vehicle. Driving doesn't mean just running the vehicle along the roads.  Abiding by the laws, (traffic regulations and all that..) and good bahaviour with all other motorists, pedestrians, and passengers are essential. The driving license here is about the ability to run a vehicle, and nothing more. This should change.  The above qualities should be made a basis for issuing a license.

Most of the auto drivers in the city are young (below 30/35). These are the problem elements. A small fraction of drivers are elderly (above 50 ); these people are much better.

I am usning a two-wheeler in this city for the last 30 years. My personal assessment about the drivers (of various nature ) here are as follows.

Auto drivers : 90 percent of them do not behave well (let me say they are rouges and looters ).

10 percent may be good and reasonable.

Taxi (car) drivers :   90 percent of them are good and mostly well behaved.

10 percent of them are bad, like the auto drivers

Private cars :  Most of them (may be 99 %) of them are good.

That 1 % .. you cant help it..!

KSRTC drivers :  They are the best drivers in this City, I believe. May be a minor fraction of them are not up to the mark.

Private bus drivers : Sure, all of them know running the bus; not driving it.

Two-wheelers :   Most of the 2w drivers are very good .  But, the new generation (youth ) are mostly bad. Among these, the most new generation drivers ( the working class youth) are extremely bad. They know running the 2wheelers, not driving it. If you ask for statistics, I sure, they will be the most accident generators.

"Auto rickshaws must be banned immediately"

OR

Redesign (make necessary changes to) the autos immediately. Issue license to drivers, only if they prove their personal / behavioural qualities.

May God bless all of us.

Village Office and Hospital

Village Offices ( Are you aware of what this is ? Yes or No, please read on)  are like Hospitals.

You go to a Hospital to rectify or update your health. A Doctor does it for you.

You go to a VillageOffice to do the same thing on your properties. You rectify or update the health of your landed properties.  And you know, your properties are born and dead in this place.

Like I had to be in a Hospital a few months ago, I had to be in a Village Office a few days ago.

Please see our Village Office. Office of  "Sasthamangalam Village".

Thattukada - for everyone

Dear all,

Thattukada scenes... again.

Thattukadas, as I told you earlier, are unique spots. You experience lives there !

Thattukadas are for everyone; for "pandithanum paamaranum" and also for "kuchelanum kuberanum" ( പണ്ഡിതനും പാമരനും, കുചേലനും കുബേരനും ).

Please see the following.

Coconut trees are in danger

A creeper is a creeper. But its beautiful !

Coconut trees in the City are in danger. I find the "head" of many of the trees are infected by some (?) decease.

Thattukada ... continued

Again on Thattukada !  Scenes from Althara junction Thattukada.

Encroachment

A few months back, the main news (sensational) for over a month was about encroachments. People with money and muscle power grabs Government (its everyone's, its ours)  property (at Munnar and other places).  That included political parties too. In my view too, such encroachments are not right.  Those people who grabbed our properties should be punished, and all the properties should be recovered.  But I am of the opinion that the encroachments at Munnar and other places are very minor.

Look at the encroachments here in this City ! Why are the authorities closing their eyes to very serious encroachments, right in the heart of our city ? Some people, for their personal gains, are encroaching public places (property). Not only that they enjoy the public property as if their own, they make lot of trouble to others living here. If you compute the financial value of these encroachments, those at Munnar or elsewhere are nothing !

Look at the photographs. A set of traders have encroached half the main road !  Its not footpath traders ! Had it been the footpath encroachments, it would have affected (making losses to) the pedestrians only. But, half the road width is encroached.. It seroiusly affects the normal traffic !! It  makes losses (of various kinds) to everyone !!

Why are the authorities closing their eyes ? Why are they so irresponsible ? Are these not encroachments ?

Let me repeat. These encroachments in the public road are far more serious, troublesome and loss making to the public, than multi-acre encroachments in the hills.  These encroachments are by looters; they are not just vendors, they make a killing on the road.

This should not be allowed.  At the same time, I am not against those vendors making their daily bread. They should be helped. But it should not be at the cost of others. The authorities should make a suitable market place and offer them at nominal rent ( not for free, since they make huge money in the road).

Thattukada.. continued

Thattukadas are interesting spots. It really fascinates me. Yesterday, while I was  passing by the Althara thattukada, there was a crowd there. Please see the pictures.

There was nothing wrong. It's all people waiting for their supply of tea and snacks.

Flourishing business !

Y town scenes

Hi.. I have a few more shots, taken on a hartal day,  from Y town.  Nothing new.. but what this poor man saw !

Here are two shots of a main road in Y town. I've no comments

Here is a sick person, mentally ill, seen roaming through the streets of Y town. He begs with pedestrians and shops. Some of them give him money, but most of them ignore him. When he came to me, asking for money, I saw his hands. He had many currency notes in it.

Y town is now facing the "construction fever". Many many buildings (residential buildings and flats) are being built now. JCBs are a part of the construction culture. Y town is no exception. Here is one among the many JCBs in action at Y town.

BSNL Mela

The BSNL Mela ended yesterday. After three days' Grand Mela !

I thought the mela would be the right (easy) place to pay the annual rent for my landline (so that I save some money !). So, I decided to visit the mela (at VJT hall). I reached there at about 5.15 pm, yesterday.

My God.. what a crowd it was ! .. The hall was packed.. people were flowing in more..

Most of the crowd wanted new mobile connections (it seems there's less money payable now ) .. as if all mobile world is about to crash..

After getting pushed in the hall, I could not locate whom to approach for my payment.  After a few minutes, I met a BSNL employee in the hall (not at the counter, he was wearing a BSNL Id card ). I enquired with him about my requirements. He was kind enough to guide me. But the crowd ! I wanted to get out .

With his permission, I dared to comment about this Mela. I said " This mela displays and proves BSNL's inefficiency".

Not that the mela is organised badly (its very fine indeed!). Why did all this crowd came in ? Just because, such facilities were not given to the clients from its customer relationship ( something BSNl haven't heard of) cell.  All these facilities, (for payment, new applications, etc..) should have been offered to the public.. from many outlets in the city, and throughout 24x7 !  What were these people doing for the last 362 days ? And now coming with a 3 days mela !

Melas are fine. Do more Melas.  Beneficiaries are plenty.

The BSNL employee, to whom I have talked, however did not agree with me in full. But he told me a story from Mahabharata.

Dharmaputhrar, wanted to see his prajas. So, one day he went out for a stroll. He saw many beggars too in the streets. He gave them ample bhiksha. And at the end of the day, he returned to his palace.  Lord Krishna, who was there, asked him about his trip. "Are you satisfied " he asked Dharmapthrar. "Yes, very much. I could give daanam to many beggars.. and that's a very sacred deed ".  Krishna was surprised. He asked Dharmaputhrar : "Giving out daanam is certainly a holy deed. But, are you not ashamed to have this many beggars in your land ?".

The BSNL man is right. I hope BSNL management understands this, that too when many are competing with them ( even with offers of money for receiving calls !).  I pity myself,  I am a BSNL customer. I am still a slave of BSNL... I am locked on to them, becauseI can't change my phone numbers (for various personal reasons).

Thattukada

Thattukada - the poor man's hotel- are plenty in our city.

Thattukadas are very interesting places. You get good items, and you get a feel of the City. If you think thattukadas are for the poor man, I am sorry, you are wrong. Even the rich comes to thattukada.

There is a very active Thattukada at Althara junction. In fact, its a Milma booth. But now its a busy thattukada. Over 6 persons are employed here. They are busy throughout the day. (Figs 3 and 4).

Last day, when I took a tea here, I clicked my mobile cam . Please see two shots. ( I know these are not really communicative).

But if thattukadas are not of interest to you, please see this Sweet stall. Sweets are being made right at the road side..  and you know they have a very brisk sale ! (Figs 1 and 2).

This shop (?) is temporary.. Its just part of the festival in our local Mosque in the Y town.

Papaya

Hi all,

Papaya (kappalanga , omakka) is a very interesting vegetable (and fruit).

Papaya is very nutritive. Very tasty, as a vegetable, and as a fruit. It has medicinal effects, particularly for the digestive system.

Here are a few pictures, just for you to see and enjoy (if you can).

Monsoon season

  Fig 1

Fig 2

Fig 3

Hi all,

I heard someone telling me " Hey.... if you cant be punctual, get lost .."

Yeah.. I got it. I am sorry yaar ..! Let me be a bit poilitical...  'I am punctual in not being punctual'. Is that Ok ?   If not, please bear with me.

I am proud, I belong to one of the best localities in this city (I am not refering to the Y town ). Its the cleanest of all such residential areas.  That's literally true to its fullest. Some people are very determined to make ours the best.. not just the cleanest, but the most beautiful. That's why, our Secretary of the Residential Association takes a lot of effort in beautifying. See the first picture.. He has made his surroundings a garden. I appreciate his efforts, and wish everyone to take such efforts. Let's make our land more beautiful, and natural. That's the way to make our land "God's own country".

But what to do .. some are determined to make our locality dirty.  See the second and third  pictures. Someone had deliberately put all their domestic dirt in the road. See the yellow board on the wall... It says, "dont put garbage here., Keep the area clean". That's why the Kudumbasree ladies (people who remove the garbage everyday from our houses) left a garbage tray right under the board. Someone  (who saves Rs. 30/- monthly, by not paying to the noble cause ) throws all their domestic garbage right below the board. And the crows...   yeah they are crows afterall.. do their job well...   spreading the dirt all over !.

MONSOON.. Almost all the media covered this issue - the lack of rains, the failure of Monsoon.  Everyone said "monsoon cheated us".

But, who cheted whom? Is it not that we all, the society, had cheated the nature. That's why the nature takes an appropriate response.

You (let us all ) be honest to the nature; nature will certainly bless us with what we need.

If it doen't rain, what are we going to do ?
