Save our 'Ambili maman' !

Oh, what's this ? Why are you making my "Ambili maaman" a graveyard ? Please don't put the ashes on his face !  Don't trouble him !!

Yesterday's news : Celestic Inc, an American company, in association with a private rocket flight company, is planning to take the cremated human remains to moon. Certainly at sky-high charges.
No, I can't agree to this (if atall someone asks me for permission !).

But dear Celestic friends, other than displaying and demonstrating your nutty character, what useful thing will you achieve from this ? May be you will earn a lot of money ! But let me ask you .. We have so much of nuclear waste in this globe. Why don't you take all that to space ( NOT to moon !) and throw them beyond the moon? Those countries or UN will pay you reasonably, I am sure. Please put your efforts for good of the society, and the Moon, Not for funny and mad claims.

Advertisements are amusing

On advertisements, again !
Advertisements are attractive, informative, entertaining, and certainly useful. But some of them are amusing too.

So is the case with some of the consumer products too - they sound reasons to hate and avoid.
When a soft drink is called “Appy”, how would malayalis relish it ?
When a skin cream is named “malam”, how would keralites respond ?
I don’t think these are proper names for any product. What do you say ?

One of the recent TV ads (for a soap) shows a girl cheating her brother ( husband ? ) ! So, it must be.

Temptations

Dear Roshni,
Yes ! You are concerned over this news, as I am. We all are concerned and worried.
A few years back, an independent responsible Organisation in India (I don’t remember the name ) made studies on all soft drinks - Coca Cola / Coke, Fanta, Thumpsup, Mirinda, ... and including bottled water. Media gave a high priority for this. You know what were the surprising findings ?
These soft drinks contain heavy metals like Lead, Arsenic, and a few more, which are dangerous.
They are so acidic in your stomach - it can dissolve calcium as big as your teeth, in minutes ! This is highly dangerous as your bones get so weak, and also slows down your metabolism.
They contain pesticides in very large proportions ! So dangerous that it damages your kidney, and liver.
It contains formaldehydes, those that can spoil your brain cells, which in turn affects your memory !
Above all, all these additives are carcenogenous (cancer causing).

Do you want more ??
Many of us, knowing all these dangers, do drink. I agree with you that its a serious concern for all of us. What's the solution ? Ther’s only one solution.
DO NOT DRINK this kind of soft drinks. Totally avoid all these "synthetic drinks ".
Then what to drink ? Probably, the only liquid you can drink safe now is "Thenga vellam". Not even "Kanji vellam" - because rice, as you get it today, is sprayed with DDT ( may be lighter in doses, however). Milk, from our dairies, too are unsafe. The water you get from our KWA sources is highly contaminated and contains very dangerous levels of other impurities. In fact, what you get through your water pipe lines is not water, but (dilute) hydrochloric acid !!
As someone said, the question is how do you want your death ; hanging, drowning, or electric shock ?

About APPY, your lovely drink ! APPY too is bottled poison. It too contains dangerous preservatives. { But may not be as high as Coke or such drinks. That’s what I think }.
I am sure you are not addicted to APPY. Have it once in a while; taper it off and stop for ever ! What else can we "poor human beings “ do ?

Anger is negative and destructive

Anger.
Kunjan Nambiar wrote :
‘Athukondarisam theeranjavanaa purayude chuttum mandi nadannu’
What can express ANGER more than this line of ‘thullal poem’ ?
Anger is the most negative of all emotions. It is destructive too.
Anger makes one mad. He can’t control himself and so its consequences are unpredictable.
Anger is the most difficult to control emotion. This uncontrollable – not quite – demon is a common characteristic of most individuals today.
How do I control anger ? I don’t know exactly how to do that. The best method, probably, is to avoid situations creating anger. Anger management is certainly the TOP item in behaviour management.

BSNL orders

A bit news .
“ BSNL directive.
The landline and WLL customers of BSNL must pay their March 2008 bills with surcharge by March 31. Customers can remit the bills at BSNL counters in the district. They can also …......

BSNL, after all it’s the ex-P&T ! They cannot think of anything less than an order. Poor customers !
I am surprised, even in today’s “Customer friendly” environment, (Customer is the king ! ), BSNL is unable to present a point politely. Who will help BSNL ? Certainly not God !

Computers are Mind Machines.

Mind Machines
My definition for a Computer is : Mind Machine.
Whenever I come across a book on Computers, I look for its definition of a Computer, and any explanation on what a Computer is. Unfortunately, only a few of the books give any definition and explanation. But, none of them defined it as a “Mind machine”. Most of the text books, our dear students refer to , are so bad. They never tell the children what it is . Many of the explanations are wrong !
Usually, basic books on Computers give an explanation on what Computers are, and what they do. But none of them seem to explain well about Computers. They treat the subject casually, as if they are the obvious facts/truths. That’s why I am unhappy about all these experts and authors. I wish to tell you all experts that the common man hasn’t understood Computers yet. They can, if you tell them in simple words, understand Computers better and hence will be able to marry them. Before going any further in raining my mind, let me make a request to everyone of you that, if you come across any interesting and explanation of simple sort on Computers, kindly let me know the references. I am at your finger tips : sciencetoday@gmail.com

I’ve been thinking of writing short notes on Computers in this column. I shall try to do that. To start with, let me first define a Computer.

Computers are mind machines. Need more explanations ? If you would like to read, I’ll write about .

Hardware and Software – Body and Mind.

The soul of the Computer- BIOS.

Conscious and Subconscious – Online and offline

Do Computers sleep ?

Do Computers dream ?

And so on…. I shall attempt to answer them, in the coming days.

Losses and Gains

Losses.. What all can one lose ? Money, cloths, home, food, Mobile phone, foot-wear, .... and what not ! One can lose even his/her fame, prestige, memory, .... , and peace of mind !! Anything !!! Of all , the easiest to lose is your 'peace fo mind'.
How about gains ? ( or profits ?) What all can you gain ? Anything.
You don't need any efforts to lose (except your body fat !). But its extremely hard to gain anything.
Do you agree ?

Auto Rickshaw : The city demon

Auto Rickshaws (the popular "auto" for the city men ) should be banned !
Not all, but the wedge type autos ! They are devils of the City !!
The three wheeled autos have a wedge shape. They wedge the traffic in crowded roads.
These wedges are scary, they cause serious problems to the 2-wheelers.
The autos ( I have Trivandrum autos in my mind ) never stop behind another vehicle. They wedge between two vehicles in its front.
Its different with the proper 3-wheelers. I mean, the type of three wheelers having a uniform body width( not wedge shaped).
I think the worst designed automobile in this world is the wedge autos. I pray, someone do something to Ban all wedge autos.
Traffic authorities should ask the wedge makers to modify the shape immediately. They should change it to full width front end.

But another immdiate issue is : TRAIN ALL AUTO DRIVERS in Trivandrum ( and elsewhere , if required) on 'how to behave, with their passengers and other motorists'.

Accidents, Fear

Accidents happen accidently. Not always.
Accidents happen due to carelessness. Yes true. They happen also due to ‘lack of a leader’. Individuals are intelligent. A group may not be so ( and are sometimes idiotic)

What I wish to tell you now is based on two recent accidents. There are many things in common for these accidents.
Both are in connection with temple festivals.
Both involve deaths and burns.
Both are electricity related (electrocuted !)
Both happened in Kerala ( where we claim that people are learned and intelligent).
Both happened right in front of many people watching.
Case 1 : Last Wednesday.
One dead (electrocuted) and many ( 14 ?) injured (burns).
Happened during a temple festival. The flag mast, which was being hoisted ceremoniously, touched high voltage lines (66 KV ?) passing just above the site. Many people were watching the function.

Case 2 : Last Thursday.
One dead, many injured. An elephant also got serious electrical shock.
A temple priest, on an elephant, during a ritual procession, was electrocuted. The procession was going down under a power line.

Why did these accidents happen ?
These two incidents could have been averted, had someone (atleast one in those gathering) had a little bit of common sense. I am sure most of the people there are educated ( above 10 th standard). Any 10th standard student now knows that electricity is dangerous ! What they all lacked is not education, but ‘common sense’.
Why none among the spectators could see that the kodimaram will touch the close/low lying power cable ? Why they dared to hoist the kodimaram right below the powerline ?
The photographs, in the newspapers, clearly shows how close the lines were.
Certainly, the absence of a good leader for the function, is evident.
During a festival, individuals try to be smart, but no one is responsible. The group, not having the leadership of a manager, is responsible.
In the second case, was the priest a normal person ? Was not the power lines visible ?
To my mind, I think you can ask many questions, but here they are all of no use.

FEAR is a good characteristic. Being afraid of is good. Fear is an emotion which nature has built into every creature, to be safe . Being safe is also to avert accidents (or danger).
Fear and Safety; Fear is the basic sense to make oneself safe. A group may not feel fear at all.

Morale of the story is, Include lessons on Safety, right from primary classes ( or nursery classes ).

Chinese and Americans

America and China.
I am not going , and am not competent, to talk any International politics. However, I have something interesting and related to these countries.
How good are Americans ? How good are Chinese ?
Some of my students, during a discussion on ‘positive thinking’, asked me the above questions. My answer was :
I like Americans, and not America.
I like the Chinese and China.
It was not very clear to them. So, I had to expand my statements, and justify my views.
What do you think of this ?

Good Friday RATs

Today is ‘Good Friday’. For Keralites however, its not that ‘good’; its “Sorrow Friday{DukhaVelli}”. Why is it so ? Is a good Friday a sorrowful one? I am not sure !
Here are a few more good Friday RATs !
******
Year 2020 : All power stations - hydroelectric, thermal, and nuclear power stations - are closed for ever. All Power generating and distributing companies, including Reliance Power, NTPC, and even our darling KSEB, are all closed, for ever.

Year 2025 : All refineries are shut down for ever. No more petrol/diesel outlets.

{ Do you think how’s this all ? Simple. By 2025, you won’t need electric power as of now. Yet, you’ll have all your gadgets and machines, and more. All homes, offices, and factories will draw their own power from the surroundings (self-sufficient). After all, you need very little power to run your home or office ( for all your needs). }
Arthur C Clarke
The creator of 2001: A space odyssey died on last Wednesday. More than a Science fiction writer, he had a fantastic vision, on how the world would be in future. He was one who predicted that man would be able to predict the climate and weather, well in advance.
Last two days, the print media carried a lot about this great visionary. While reading some of them, I remembered Prof. Pisharody, the great Indian Scientist.
I heard, from my colleagues in the MET department, that Prof.Pisharody could use ‘natural signs’ to predict weather. Eg., when ‘Kanikkonna’ blooms in Kerala region, it’s the onset of pre-Monsoon.
But I know one thing for sure. My grand mother could make very short term weather predictions. In the morning ( or daytime), “Kaakka nananjirangiyaal, annu thorilla ! “. This means : If it rains, and if crows are flying around wet in the rains, then its going to be rainy for the whole day.

Is someone compiling all this kind of rich knowledge ? Village knowledge resources !!

Virgin ideas are haunting me ! Did you see the advertisement, about getting paid ? If not, please see my last day’s posts, and come back.
Today, let me refer to another news in the Business India magazine. Virgin Mobile launched their mobile services in India, through a franchisee arrangement with Tata Teleservices ( your Tata Indicom people !). The financial arrangements, for the partnership, are not known. However, we know and expect, Virgin would have paid heavily for using the TataTele services and infrastructure. But now all are in a confusion; who is who’s franchisee ? The report says, Virgin gets payments, as royalty fee, from TataTele. That’s business !
Who asked “What’s in a name” ? Don’t bother; Branson knows ‘there’s lot in a name’. A name is enough to earn business , and so means money.

Want another example for the value of a name ? Then here it is : Mohanlal’s name sells a lot of that ayurvedic powder. Got it ?

Cricket and Behaviour - Sreesanth example.

Our cricketer boy Sreesanth, you know, is matured now.
This is what he himself says. I am referring to the news reports, quoting Sreesanth as saying that"I am a much more matured cricketer now". He also said : " ..... there is a very thin line between foolishness and bravery ".

Learning from lessons is always good. And one should learn too. But this is a case of learing by self ! Putting the hands in a flame, get burnt, and understand that flame is very hot and can burn ! That's what Sreesanth did learn.
There are many things in life one should learn, without experiencing by self. There are many lessons in life, everyone should learn and understand. Not only from books or the like, but from his enviromnment (including home, school, teachers, parents, friends, and so on..). However, there could be many lapses. When one gets into the society and start working and contributing, all kinds of lessons get applied.

A driver should know how to operate (move ) his machine/vehicle. He needs to know many things more to be a driver. He should know, in addition to moving/running his vehicle, road/traffic rules, handling emergencies, movement forecasts, behaving well with passengers and other vehicles, and so on. Being empathetic is yet another major lesson. Usually, when one learns driving, he learns only about moving the vehicle, and little bit about road/traffic rules. I've not come across any driver in Kerala, who has learnt how to deal with his passengers or other vehicles running with him. Many organisations train their drivers, first on how to handle people/passengers in his vehicle. No taxi/ auto driver in Kerala is trained in how to behave, except for a small percentage of drivers (probably with a born soft genes in them). That's why I suggest that all taxi/auto drivers must be trained in behaviour, before they are permitted to drive a taxi. ( This is applicable to non-taxis as well).

Coming back to Sreesanth. Skills in playing cricket alone are not sufficient. To be a professional (even a game like cricket), one needs training in all the other related aspects too. That includes how to behave with fellow players, public, opponents, umpires, media , and so on. Skills in all these associated elements cannot be acquired by self experiencing. Most of the knowledge and skills are from people who have already learned it. That's training. Sreesanth ( and other immature cricketers) should be trained in these kind of lessons. Selection team should look at cricket skills and other 'soft skills' needed for being a professional player. Remember, a player of this sort, is not just an individual, but is 'an Indian'.

A man is a man, because he doesn't show off his 'animal instincts'. If he shows, he is not a man, but an animal only. This is where "self awareness" plays a role. When one doesnot have the self-awareness, he'll show his 'animal instincts'. This is what happened to Sreesanth too. Sreesanth (in fact everyone) shows his 'animal instincts' while playing. He expresses his emotions without any self-restraint. Its clear; he lacks 'self-awareness'.
Now that someone is training him with good lessons, let's hope Sreesanth will shine like a super star. Since he himself is aware of the facts now (I hope so), he'll do better.

Sreesanth, we all are your fans. We are proud of you. We all pray for you and wish you the best. We want you, and you will, become #1 in World Cricket.

Spicy Virgin

Another RAT. Its about advertisements.

Last day, I told you about Virgin Mobile’s new scheme. I believe, this offer is revolutionary and is about to change the mobile industry. The offer is certainly tempting. Today, I wish to tell you about and compare an advertisement by Virgin Mobile, against another by Spice Mobile Phones.
First, about the SPICE MOBILEPHONES.
The advertisement ( in local news papers) presenting 6 models of color phones says:
“ Send a romantic SMS to your English teacher.
Take a photo of your neighbor Juliet.
Send a missed call to your old girl-friend.

Sweet wordings na ? But I feel a bit irritated. Is it proper to send a romance message to your teacher ? Romancing with your teacher ?? No, No, that’s not right. Never think of such things. Relationship with the Teacher (Guru) is very noble and is certainly NOT of romance type. Indian culture doesnot agree to this kind of, let me say, immoral thoughts.
The copy writer for this ad may not have understood the sentiments and value of Indian culture. But the company too has the responsibility to ensure the correctness and appropriateness of the message (including the words !) they are advertising.

Or, will someone tell me that I misunderstood the meaning of ‘Romance’ ?

Now, about the second. This is an ad by Virgin. Excellent ad, beautiful and meaningful. The ad has a girl, wearing a T shirt with a mobile number printed on it. And she says, ‘Call me’ ( with the innocent (virgin) idea of getting paid ! ). The message is loud and clear, presented beautifully, and tempting.
A bit closer look and analysis tells you a lot ! The girl’s telephone number is very interesting, not alone her looks. A bit of commonsense will tell you the meaning and relevance. If you are very anxious to know that, please see the ad and analyse yourself. If in doubt, please ask me ( sciencetoday@gmail.com ).

I wish I switch over my BSNL postpaid mobile to Virgin ! Let me get paid, not robbed.

For those of you who haven't seen the ads, please see them tomorrow in this blog.

Changes for the better

Here is a RAT !
IT @ Corporation office, Trivandrum

Today, I had been to the Office of Trivandrum Corporation, for payment of House Tax.
I did not have the previous payment receipt with me.
At the reception, I told him my intention. He, with a smile, asked me to go to their Computer room, for obtaining details of payment to be done. There, at the Computer room ( 4 persons with their PCs and sitting in their well of files) , I was immediately attended. The lady was very polite, and after going through her Computer, gave me the data on amount to be paid, written on a piece of paper.
I went to the Counter hall. About 15 counters, for various purposes, are functioning there. I took a token from the ‘token vending machine’. No.xx. To my surprise, my turn came within a minute – by token number and counter number flashing on a display board. At the counter, the man was busy attending to another person; however, he asked me to take a seat. My second surprise – he too was very polite, and with a smile ( no Government employee normally receives a customer with a smile !). In another minute's time, I handed over the slip with details (the Computer lady gave me ) to him. The man started typing the details, name, house no, amount, etc.. and at the end of which he printed a receipt. I paid the cash, got the receipt and moved out of the counter. I verified the entries on the receipt and found that the house no.and location are wrong. I went back to him, amidst his attending another person. He listened to me and took back the receipt. He made another one, again by typing out the details. This time it was OK, and I returned.

The points I wish to make here are the following.
1. Trivandrum Corporation Office (atleast the payment counters) have certainly improved a lot, and is really good. I appreciate them. The personnel too are good ( I understand that these staff members are contract employees, and not permanent staff. May be that’s why !)
2. It is unfortunate that they are using the Computer as a glorified typewriter ( ? ). OR, the software for the payment system is not proper. Why should he type out the name and other details over again, when the data base is supposed to have all the details automatically shown? The only input requirements ( as far as the house tax is concerned) is the ward number, and house number ( the TC no. ). The software should be made to account all details automatically.
3. For any payment, why should the customers go to the Computer room ? The same details can be made available at the Counter, on his Computer. This can bring down the transaction time to a tenth of the present system.

I wish, Corporation’s IT advisors listen !

This appreciation is in comparison to my experiences in the Corporation office during 1981 ( in connection with a house building permit).

Global warming - Lighting load

Global Warming.
There are several elements warming our globe ! Each one of us contribute to this. One among them, certainly not insignificant, is the lighting. We use large amounts of energy for lighting, which later gets to heating our environment. Solutions to global warming, let us say, starts here.
There are many possible ways to reduce the lighting loads (a global load) . One among them is, as all experts recommend, is to use CFLs instead of regular bulbs. This is not aimed at reducing the electricity consumption only !
I am aware that solution to global warming should start with me ( everyone). This suggests that I should be interested in using less energy. Yes, but this need should be motivated by lower costs too. If it costs more to consume less energy, who would be interested ? Unfortunately, that’s the status now.

Comparison of Incandescent bulbs (Bulb) Vs Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL).

Bulb CFL
Price Rs. 20/ for 40 W Rs.120/- for 8 W
Light output (equal) 40 W 8 W
Life ( over 3 to 4 hrs daily use) > 2 years ~ 1 year

Total cost for bulb for 2years is actually less than Total cost of CFL for 2 years.
With the current energy charges, we could see that we actually pay more if using the CFL( because initial cost of CFL is very haigh). Then why should one go for CFL ? I consume less ( 1/5th ) power (Nation gains, I am happy). But I pay 12 times more for the lamp ( I lose, and so unhappy). This is the simple reason, why many are not opting for CFLs. Solution is : I should not lose more. Make available CFLs cheap. Produce CFLs in large quantities costing less than the ordinary bulbs.

Chinese made CFLs are available here at less than Rs. 60/- But their life is too short. However, this suggests that CFLs can certainly be made available at much cheaper rates. Our Government should invest in mass producing cheap good quality CFLs.
A fraction of the amount for loan waivers (which does no good to any one including those beneficiaries (?) ) would be enough to do this. The returns are tremendous, in cash and kind.
Please give me an opportunity to contribute in resolving global warming !

Technical Analysis - Bulls or Bears ?

Business Line ( from Hindu) is one among the most popular business dailies. It gives excellent business news coverage. Their presentation of stock quotations is the best. I simply love them. On Sat and Sun too they carry excellent ( and useful) reports and analysis. I appreciate all that because they are very good.
But I am worried about their “Technical Analysis” column. Let me quote some portions of this regular column.

xxxday’s trading activity witnessed bull domination. However, the sentiment reading of the tradable counters remains bearish. Bull domination on xxxday is likely to change the sentiment reading in their favour. On the contrary, the current sentiment reading is likely to be strengthened with additional counters.”

The above is the introduction. This is followed by Stock Futures and Cash Segment analysis. Both contains the following :
“ There are no selling opportunities for xxxday’s trading. The best is likely to be buying in ………. This counter is in down trend. Bull move on xxxday is likely to reverse the existing trend in this counter “

The above quotations are constant in the analysis, except for the name of the day, a scrip name, and the word bull or bear.

I am confused and is not digestible to me . It only amuses me. How about you ?

World Consumer Rights Day

Today is March 15, "World Consumer Rights Day".

Any transaction, I think, should be a "give and take" activity.
For the buyer, it should be : Give money and take the item.
For the seller, it must be : Give the item and take money.
The policy of "First Give" by all would be a pleasure for any transaction. This is not merely on the issue of "trust". As consumers, we all are at the receiving end. A consumer is to 'get and pay' for goods and services they need. The items/services should satisfy the buyer / customer, in all respects.
.........
... Oh NO ! ... This is just blah..blah.. I'll stop here !
Thanks. See you later
KP

Ramu; Cheriya manushyanum Valiya lokavum; G Aravindan

Hai all,
Yesterday, my thoughts were on MOCO. Today, its on "Ramu".
I have a friend Ramu. He is just 1 year old, and my neighbor. A cute smart "sundaran" ofcourse !
But I am now talking not about baby Ramu, but about "Ramu", the great character created by the genius G Aravindan.
Sri. G Aravindan, the famous Malayalam film maker/director, was not only a film maker; he was well known as a Cartoonist, even before he entered film making.

My family was fans of the "Mathrubhoomi Weekly". During 60s and early 70s, when I was a school student, our main attraction in Mathrubhoomi were (1) Ramu and (2) Novels, translated from English or Bengali. I remember the days when "Dracula", the horror novel's malayalam version, was being serialied !
Ramu was the focal character in the cartoon serialised, on the last page of Mathrubhoomi weekly. Ramu's creator, Sri. G. Aravindan, was from our town , and a friend/ class mate of my uncle. This too prompted us to closely watch and study the cartoon serial. Moreover, my second uncle, who was a voracious reader, used to explain the intricacies and meanings of what Sri. Aravindan conveyed through his character Ramu.
The series was titled " Cheriya manushyanum Valiya lokavum" { Small man and big world }.

In 1978, a local book publisher at Trivandrum, compiled the serial cartoons ( but was not complete) and published as a book. I have a copy of that collection with me. Today, I traced that gem from my library( I pity myself, my library is in a very bad shape. No order, not protected, and NOT in good shape ! I must act immediately to safe guard my gems !!).

I would like to show you a few specimen pages, and some pictures. That's those pictures above.
Any comments ?

MOCO

Last week, I rediscovered my favourite “MOCO”.
MOCO is a cartoonist. Sorry, two cartoonists. Moco is the name joining the names of the two creators. (More on them later ).
A strip cartoon, which was serialized in “Kerala Kaumudi” newspaper (published from Trivandrum) during the 70s, was my favourite. I simply loved it. The main character in this cartoon is a short round headed man. The strip, in two or three frames, covers his actions/experiences of an event. Please see samples below, for you to enjoy.
I used to cut the cartoon strips, and collect. I had pasted all those strips (about 300 ) in a long note book ( in two books !).
However, the name of the character was not known to me then. I could research and find out. I gave this collection to some of my friends (during 70s/80s) and put the challenge to find the character’s name. If I remember right, over 20 people attempted. Only one could identify the character’s name, from the cartoon strips ( There was no Internet those days to search for MOCO ). Thus it was thrilling to me. Each strip is so amusing, it makes you laugh !

Last week, I used my digital camera to digitize my collection. Now I am editing each image ( using Picasa 2 ) , for creating a slide show. I am sure, this show, with over 300 (?) cartoon strips, will be a great entertainer. I shall keep you informed of the progress.

Any suggestions ? Please write to me.

Google and Blogger

I wish I could send the following message to the Google Administrators.
You may ask me : Then why don't you ?
My answer is : Will you kindly make an attempt ? If Google doesn't require any feedback from the Googlians, how can I ?

Hai All at Google and Blogger,
I am a Googlian ! Kindly take a few moments to read the following .
If you are reading this, I don’t know how I managed to put across this message to you !!

1.
Google Home Page.
Google is no more “just a search engine”. It provides a lot of extremely useful features to its users ( Googlians, people like me ! ).
The Home Page, even now, compels us to perceive Google as a mere search utility. Most of the utilities are hidden ! Some of the essentials like Orkut and Gmail are given a “microscopic sized link” , but normally don’t catch one’s eyes. Blogs, and ‘More Google products’ are totally hidden ! Users have to search the home page to locate their required utility. I think this should change. The ‘More Google Products’ page contains a lot, but is not attractive, and takes lot of visual searching ( not ordered logically !) to locate the utilities. I suggest, please redesign the Google Home page, and ensure that all the major features are readily available from the Home Page. This doesn’t mean that the Home page is to be made ‘crowded’. There’s lot of space available on Google Home page to incorporate changes and make it more friendly and beautiful.

Another very important feature essentially required is your willingness to accept our (the users) suggestions and comments on Google. Please provide a link, right in the Home Page, for us to send in our comments and suggestions to you ( You may get very valuable suggestions and ideas !).

2.
Blogger
Blogger itself is an excellent and beautiful one. The Blogger Home page is very beautiful and friendly ( Its inherited property ! ). However, it lacks the following.
a. Blogger Home page focus only on two things : Creating a new blog and Sign in to the Blogger account. That’s quite inadequate. Anyone coming to the Blogger Homepage should be able to search a blog, view the blogs, and respond. I think Blogger should be a site not just to create blogs, but should also facilitate viewing all blogs. It may be noted that the blog viewers/audience are many fold larger than the blogers themselves.
Please provide necessary links/ facility to search for blogs / groups from its Home page.

b. There is no way to send you suggestions or comments to the Blogger’s Administrators ( Won’t you like it OR won’t it be useful, to get feedback from the users ? ).
I honestly believe the above changes will increase the utility and beauty of the site.

If you are reading this, I don’t know how I managed to put across this message to you !!

Countdown and count down

Hi all,
In my Organisation, where I lived for 33 years, there is a house magazine titled "Countdown". I didn't like that name, and I expressed my view to many there. Sorry, I wasn't that influential to change that name or state of the magazine.

Countdown signifies something (some event) coming to an end. Countdown is a very important term, as far as the activities of my Organisation is concerned. Don't guess..... it's about launching of Rockets and Satellite Launch Vehicles! (Yeah, SLVs, the term synonymous with our past President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam ). Counting down and at zero the event happens (launch, liftoff !). Though there are many more things that follow after the launch (count up), the literary sense of the word suggests - 'its over' !
What sense does it carry, for a magazine to be called "Countdown" ? I won't say "ROGER" to this name/idea.
I pray, let 'Countdown' keep counting down - never reaching zero !

"Salesman as a strategist" - some Trivandrum thoughts

“Salesman as a strategist. Don’t just make a sale, but win a customer for ever, says a guru of CEOs”.
This is quoted from a book review : “What the customer wants you to know” by Ram Charan ( in the Business Today, March 23, 2008 ).
The review ( and maybe the book ) is very interesting. What fascinated me is not the well known salesmanship principles presented in the book, or about the (guru) author.

When I read this review, I’ve been thinking (random thoughts na ? ) about the salesmen (and not salesgirls) in Kerala, and Trivandrum in particular. You may ask me what’s so special about them. Yes, there is a lot special about salesmen here in Trivandrum (this includes shop keepers, small and big, and footpath vendors).

Important notice : I am not talking about the Tamilian vendors or shopkeepers here. They are honest and reasonable people, They behave well, unlike their local colleagues. Its also not about the polished salespeople in the big bazzars too.

Have you been to Chalai (a male dominant vegetable market) any time ? Or to Palayam Connemara (a female dominant ) fish market ? If not, please make a visit at the earliest. I am not trying to bias you. So, please take care and study well. I don’t want to tell you how (rough and tough) they behave. But, let me tell you : None of them will offer you a smile, Anger is their prime (sole)expression. None of them would ( sorry, most of them wouldn’t) show a polite response. If you try to bargain, you must plug your ears well ahead ( its raining all abuses, harsh words ). At Chalai, its different. The vendor, if you bargain, would call his friend at the opposite shop/footpath, and start abusing him ( not really him, its at you). The vendors at these markets are very particular in throwing the waste at the middle of the passage/road; make maximum life miserable for the customers and pedestrians ( and certainly to the next shop keeper too).

Even if their goods are getting rotten ( fish, fruits, ..), they won’t sell their goods for 10 ps less. In Chennai and other places, when its getting late in the evening and if the items are not fully sold out, the vendors sell them at reduced rates. Trivandrum vendors dare to throw the items, but won’t reduce any. Probably, a small fraction of the goods may be enough to earn their money ( they can afford not to sell the rest !). Their sole idea is to maximize the profits with minimum of sales ( and least of efforts) ! In Trivandrum, a customer is never the king, the shop keeper / vendors are.

Do you think these footpath/market vendors are poor people, trying to earn their daily bread by selling some goods ? That’s the general perception. But, you are totally mistaken. They are rich ! No jokes !! Make friendship with one in this ( somehow !), and try to know how wealthy he/she is. You’ll be surprised, most likely he/she will be richer than the average Keralite !
Every “meenkari” at Palayam has a mobile phone ! Most of them live in good concrete buildings. TV, fridge, .. yeah they have all. Their children are studying in one of the best schools in the city; …. These are all excellent, shows the overall development of Kerala, and is appreciable. But…

What was I talking about ? Oh ! Salesmanship ! Yeah, that’s totally missing in this corner of the world. Here, Cutomer is NOT, and never, the king.

Are not these people special ?

Trivandrumites are now so tuned well with these people, that they neither expect any better, or complain ( they just ignore, because they know how a dog’s tail is !).

The great mega waiver !

The great mega waiver !
Let me quote one more article ( from the current issue of BUSINESS TODAY, March 23, 2008 ; Page no. 16 )
“ Not Really Inclusive : In all the hype and hoopla over the massive giveaways in Budget 2008 – the Rs.60000 crore farm loan waiver , the restructuring of personal Income Tax slabs………… .. …
We are firmly with the Indian farmer, but we still beg to join issue with him (Fin Min). The Rs. 60000 crore loan waiver is a one-time arrangement. It does nothing to address the infrastructural and systemic issues that give rise to that indebtedness.”

The article then states reasons for the indebtedness and makes a few suggestions … ….
“ Encouraging investments in rural cold storage and logistic chains …
To build and recharge basic farm infrastructure like irrigation…
Public investments on such a massive scale on the farm sector would have helped create rural infrastructure and incomes, provided a fillip to the industrial growth and addressed the issue of inclusiveness. …. If properly administered, it can provide some immediate relief, but will it really help the farmer over the long term ? We don’t think so .”

This commonman’s view matches well with the above experts. Giving out huge money FREE to the farmers will bringout new issues.
Oh ! No, No.. Please don’t think I am anti-farmer ! We all, everyone and the Government, must help those poor farmers. They are the people feeding us. They are our “annadaata” (who gives food). They must be worshipped, and not alone helped.

But help should not be in this form. It's not going to benefit them, but going to trouble someone else.

"Daan karna hai"

I hope Monika Halan ( Last Note, Outlook Money, 15 March, 2008 ) won't mind if I quote her.
" The door bell rings. It is Radheysham, the Society guard, at 7 in the morning. He asks for 100 bucks. Why ? I asked incredulously. "Daan karna hai", he drawls, shifting his tobacco in his mouth.
Here is a guy asking me to pay for charity he wants to do to earn brownie points with his deity. Sounds bizarre ? Not if you are the Govt of India, looking at elections this year and have a Finance Minister adept at hiding the spots .....
The doles are : 40 million farmers will get Rs. 60000 Crore of their loans waived off. ......... Make no mistake, we will all pay ultimately for this borrowing......
The cynically political budget has given the poor man the fish to eat rather than become an opportunity to teach him how to fish. ..........

""

Now, let me quote Mohit Satyanand ( Be on your guard this year, Outlook Money, 15 March, 2008 )

" Much of the FM's speech was devoted to the agricultural sector, and he doled out large chunks of cash ( ours, I guess) to forgive Agricultural loans. If it makes him feel like Mother Teresa, doling out relief and succour to the suffering masses, so be it. .... this does nothing to tackle the structural problems of Indian agriculture. ..... Indian agriculture will remain plagued , and just as the 'loan melas' of yester year predictably led to loan waivers, we will see more frequent and more magnanimous gestures to Indian farmers which are unproductive, at best. .........
"
Did you get the message ? Loan waivers are certainly not the way to help the poor.

SONY AIBO and PLEO

March 6, 2008. 'The Hindu' presented a small news item (in Newscape), with reference to the CeBIT IT fair.
For digital gadgets hot and weird.
" Californean firm Ugobe presented a small robotic dinausaur dubbed PLEO, similar to Sony's AIBO robotic dog that has to be looked after and nurtured like a Tamagochi. Pleao too can be programmed via a USB cable connected to your Computer...
The Pleo is a green and brown pet... "

The green and brown look ! That's my point now. Aibo had the look of a machine, not really the look of a live being. Probably, that's Aibo's weakness. When I met Aibo (only through the net !), I suggested Sony (through an email ) to think of putting a good looking coat for Aibo; a fur coat tailored to match in color and look. But, may be, the message didn't reach Sony. May be that they thought Aibo should look like a machine (for being serious !) only, and should NOT look like a silly play item (like a teddy bear !). But I still beleive, Aibo must have a lovely doggy skin !

Pleo, I am sure, would be liked by many; its going to be a success ( except for its weird Dinausaur look !!)

Get paid for using services : Mobile phones, TV, PC, Net, ..

A few years back, when Mobile phones were introduced in Trivandrum, one of my friends took a mobile connection. The then rates were sbout Rs. 4.5 per minute ! Mobile phones, more of a status symbol !
When we were chatting in the canteen over the lunch, he was quoting this himalayan rates. Then I told him :
The days are not far, when you will get money for having a phone (mobile or not !), and more money to use it. Everyone laughed it off.
Now, I am about to call my friend to tell/show him what "Virgin Mobile" is offering.
Virgin now offers 10 paise for every minute of your incoming calls.
Here is the turn of the system. Instead of paying for a service, you get paid for availing it.

The "service" is no more an offer to use a facility (by paying the company), but to use it by getting paid by the consumer.

Look at that offer in a different angle. Wow, Virgin has a fantastic idea ( a virgin idea ? ). Every call received is a call made ! Every company prompts you to make calls, Virgin prompts you to receive calls. That's the virgin idea !!

Are you mobile phone companies, cable TV/ DTH companies listening ? ( I am sure they are !). But can you visualise what Virgin (or another smart one !) is going to do ?

They will offer : free mobile connections, free outgoing calls, and get paid to receive calls. More attractions will certainly follow.

Oh! it took a virgin idea for the turn around.

Oh ! What a lovely waiver

Quote from "The Hindu", Monday, March 10, 2008
""
Oh! What a lovely waiver by P. Sainath.
... the waiver (of agricultural loans) is no solution to even the immediate crisis let alone long-term agrarian problems. Nothing in this budget will raise farm incomes.
""
The article analyses the agricultural / farmers' issues. I wish every policy maker read this. As I felt it, writing-off loans cannot just save the farmer. I think its not going to help the real poor. Instead it's going to fatten the purse of the "poor looking" rich.

It also will make another section of society disgusted, as they are robbed.

Interesting data

I've been going through the "Business India Index" page of Business India (Mar 9, 2008) last day. Please have a look at the following :

Percent of Indian executives who consider an affair in the office as a strategic move to climb corporate ladder : 44

Percentage of executives in Kolkata and Mumbai who say that women often initiate affairs in the office : 80 & 72

Quite interesting isn't it ? Any comments ?

Now to another one :
Chances are that Indian men visit beauty parlours every week or 2-3 times a month : 1 in 3.

Must be an error.. uh... I can't believe ... What do you say ?

Agricultural loans written off

This year's budget, as all of you know, is a boon to all farmers. Not really; its a boon to all those who took agricultural loans; they don't have to pay them back .
But I am confused. Is this the right thing to do. I think the loans should not be written off.
Oh..Oh.. I can see some people running down to me .. firing me.. Oh..includes experts too... HOLD ON, HOLD On; Sorry da ! What I think is that writingoff loans this way is not the right thing. But, HELP THOSE POOR PEOPLE. Helping should not be by giving away free money.

Now, you can see many running to the banks for agricultural loans ( Because these loans will one day be written off ! ).

Tax payers think : My money is being given away free to some people. Government, by force, grabs my money and gives to somebody (though they are the poor) !
Tax payers think : I'll certainly pay all taxes. But that money must be utilised for the betterment of the society at large. My money, when used for development activities, is best utilised. But I don't like that money to be given away free to someone.
Use my money to build, and only to build. That's for everyone.

WE ALL MUST HELP the poor. No doubts on that.
You experts can think of 100 solutions to manage the situation better, I am sure.
But writing-off is NOT the method.

36 years in Trivandrum, and counting

On the evening ( 10 pm) of 2 March, 1972, I've landed in Trivandrum. From Kottayam, by the chuku pukku raile, the Great Venad Express.. To live in... And, now, 36 summers have passed since then. Hey, what was I doing all these YEARs ? I don't have a quick answer. Maybe, I'll think over for a while and answer this question.

I was a boy that time, 21 years! But now, I am a BOY of 57 !!

Being at 57, and 36 years here at Trivandrum, are certainly reasons to be happy. Making a balance sheet of life here sofar is difficult, and meaningless. I don't know what are at the Assets side and what those are at the Liabilities side. In any case, it is a zero balance statement (Is it really, I an not sure ).
Why should I try to make a balance sheet now. No need. I don't have to present a balance sheet to anyone. Its all an open book, in front of the God almighty.
Moreover, if it balances over, in my own consciousness, then, that's the best statement.
How many moments did I live here? If a moment is a second, then 36 x 365 x 24 x 60 x 60 moments. Its not that a large number. Or, is it ??
Anyhow, the count goes on increasing (and counting up or down ? )!

RAM and RAT

Namaste.

This is Prasanna.

Welcome to my world of random thoughts and memories. Here, I plan to share my random thoughts and memories that comes to my mind, as and when I am clicked, by someone or something.
Being RANDOM is natural; so are my thoughts, and my memories. I shall not manipulate them.

RAM : Random Access Memories as and when it pops-up
and
RAT : Random Access Thoughts as and when it clicks

Here is a pop-up !
I started writing my "feels" when I was an eighth standard student. I wrote in my mother tongue Malayalam, in the last page of my Malayalam notebook. I wrote just two paragraphs about a boat race (Vallamkali), based on a poem (from the 9th standard text book) taught by my grand father (Appooppan). He was my inspiration to write what I felt like.
But I didn't show my article to any one other than my Appooppan. The paper may still be lying in the 'thattinpuram' of my 'tharavaadu'.

Later, over this many years, I wrote some of my experiences, thoughts, and feels. Most of what I wrote are impulsive, and some of them may not look matured. But that's not a deterrent for me. Let me remember, think, dream, and write, as I like (feel) it. That's a pleasure too !

Are there any rules to think ? Are there any rules to write? May be, there are. But let me not worry on those now. Let me Remember, Think, Dream and Write whatever, but not hurting anyone. You would agree with me, honest writings may hurt someone sometimes. But, YOU please don't get hurt !

About the title RAM and RAT ? I'll be back shortly. Thank you.
